Blue Night is the expanded edition of Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers' 1985 recording. Blakey led the Jazz Messengers for 35 years, and by 1984-85 his band featured five prodigious talents: Terence Blanchard (trumpet), Donald Harrison (alto/soprano sax), Jean Toussaint (tenor sax), Lonnie Plaxico (bass), and Mulgrew Miller (piano). At 65, Blakey remained as vibrant as his young bandmates, and the album showcases the group's hard-bop excellence with originals by Blanchard, Harrison, and Toussaint alongside the classic "Body and Soul." This 2LP expanded edition adds alternate takes of "Two of a Kind," "Blue Minor," and "Mr. Combinated," includes new liner notes by Scott Yanow, and is available on vinyl for the first time.
