In 1974, trumpeter Baikida Carroll — a member of St. Louis's Black Artists Group — cut his first album under his own name in Paris at the invitation of Jef Gilson. He surrounded himself with kindred spirits, including saxophonist/flutist Oliver Lake and Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, for a set that sends free jazz back to its long-lost African roots. The album opens with a side built around two long, exploratory tracks.
