Released in 1975 with the backing of Island Records and her band Funk House, Nasty Gal was Betty Davis's third album and leaned fully into the fierce, hyper-charged persona that made her a pre-punk funk-blues pioneer. One of the first Black women to write, arrange and produce her own records, Davis raps, purrs and shrieks over manic funk-rock, laying claim to the "bad girl" anthems that now saturate popular music.
