Recorded in the fall of 1960 and released in 1961 on Nat Hentoff's Candid label, Mingus captures the bassist-composer leading both his celebrated piano-less quartet with Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond and a larger ensemble with piano and additional horns. The sprawling "M.D.M." weaves together themes by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Mingus himself, while "Stormy Weather" and "Lock 'Em Up" round out this landmark session.
