Hybrid Stereo SACD — plays in all CD and SACD players. Analogue Productions (Atlantic 75 Series), mastered directly from the original analog tape to DSD by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.
The Genius of Ray Charles, his sixth studio album, arrived on Atlantic in 1959 and set aside the gospel-jazz-blues fusion of his mid-'50s sides for swinging pop with full big band arrangements. Charles is joined by ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras across the first half of the program, belting out six numbers arranged by Quincy Jones. "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Deed I Do" are highlights, with solos from tenor man David "Fathead" Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and, on "Two Years of Torture," tenor Paul Gonsalves.
The remaining six numbers are ballads, with Charles backed by a string orchestra arranged by Ralph Burns, among them "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'." His voice is in peak form throughout, bringing soul to even the most well-worn standards. For this Atlantic 75 reissue, Chris Bellman mastered directly from the original analog tape to DSD at Bernie Grundman Mastering; the hybrid disc adds a Red Book stereo CD layer for conventional players.
