First recorded in December 1970, Nation Time was Joe McPhee's debut LP, born from the creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York and inspired by Amiri Baraka's poem "It's Nation Time." Two bands feature across the set — one a funky free unit with guitar and organ, the other a more standard formation with two drummers and pianist Mike Kull — ignited by McPhee's passionate post-Coltrane tenor. Originally issued in 1971 on CjR, it remains a searching, urgent classic of spiritual free jazz.
