Dogon A.D. is the 1972 debut album by alto saxophonist and composer Julius Hemphill, a cornerstone of the era's new jazz. Recorded by a quartet of Hemphill on alto and flute, Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Abdul Wadud on cello and Phillip Wilson on drums, its title track turns a staggering 11/8 groove into a hypnotic, blues-soaked epic. Spare yet adventurous, it remains one of the defining documents of the St. Louis avant-garde.
