Nagaoka - JN-PMONO 1.0E Replacement Stylus for MP-MONO

The 1.0 mil stylus for the Nagaoka MP-MONO — sized for the groove dimensions of 1940s and 1950s mono pressings, and the reason to own this cartridge if you collect originals.

Early mono records were cut with wider grooves than anything made since. A modern 0.7 mil tip sits too deep in them, riding on damage and debris at the bottom of the groove instead of on the wall where the music is. Nagaoka's answer is a 0.5 × 1.0 mil bonded elliptical diamond based on the dimensions commonly used at the time, so the stylus sits where the cutter did.

Nagaoka is explicit about what that buys: thicker mid-bass and more of the air of the original recording, in pursuit of a more authentic mono experience. The company frames the whole MP-MONO project this way — rather than treating mono as a single format, it approaches these records through the physical characteristics of the groove itself.

Because it is a stylus assembly rather than a cartridge, one MP-MONO body plus this stylus and the 0.7 mil version covers original pressings and modern mono reissues alike. Swapping takes seconds, with no realignment. Note the tracking force is heavier than with the 0.7 mil stylus, at 2.0 to 2.5 g.
