Riding the unlikely commercial success of Modern Rock chart-topper "Pepper," Austin's Butthole Surfers returned to the studio in 1998 for the follow-up, After The Astronaut. Leaning further into experiments with electronics, hip-hop, and acid grooves, the result is a dizzying orbital trip expanding the idea of what's possible in rock. Disputes with Capitol Records left the album unreleased, and it developed a mythic status over the following quarter century. Now newly mixed by guitarist/producer Paul Leary, it finally arrives as a bold, idiosyncratic evolution of the band's sun-fried psychedelia.
