The Clown was Charles Mingus' second masterpiece in a row, featuring Jean Shepherd narrating the title tune's story of a clown who tries to please the world with his performances. The album also introduced two of Mingus' finest compositions: the driving "Haitian Fight Song" and the melancholy Charlie Parker tribute "Reincarnation of a Lovebird." Throughout, Mingus tries to evoke something specific with every piece, giving even his most impressionistic forays a strong storytelling quality.
