A jewel of West Coast chamber jazz, this 1955 Pacific Jazz date documents drummer Chico Hamilton's extraordinary quintet featuring Buddy Collette on woodwinds, Jim Hall on guitar, Fred Katz on cello and Carson Smith on bass. The ensemble created a singular sound with its unusual instrumentation and poised, inventive arrangements: Side 1 gathers introspective studio recordings including "Blue Sands," "The Sage" and a shadowy "My Funny Valentine," while Side 2 captures the quintet's fiery side in live performance at Strollers in Long Beach, California. This mono Tone Poet edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket.
