Arriving a year before A Love Supreme, Live at Birdland catches John Coltrane in the middle of the artistic leap that defined his final Impulse! years. Despite the title, the album pairs three recordings made live at Birdland on October 8, 1963 with two cut at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio the following month — all with the classic quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. It holds the original "Alabama," written in response to the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, alongside a live reading of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" with Coltrane leading on soprano.
