Released in 1966 as the soundtrack to the British film of the same name, Alfie was arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson and features a stellar cast including Kenny Burrell, J.J. Johnson and Phil Woods supporting Sonny Rollins. Across six cuts, Rollins captures the textures of life through incisive, energetic playing and coherent improvisation. While "Alfie's Theme" and its variants leave the strongest impression, "He's Younger Than You" is touching and the relaxed "On Impulse" carries a fine sense of immediacy.
