The replacement drive belt for the Debut range, Debut EVO and X-series decks. Pro-Ject says change it every year or two whether it looks worn or not — because by the time it looks worn, it has been costing you speed stability for months.

A drive belt is a consumable and it fails gradually, which is what makes it insidious. Rubber loses elasticity with age whether the turntable is used or sitting idle, and as it does, speed stability degrades in small increments nobody notices day to day. What you eventually hear — if you hear it at all — is a slight wavering on sustained piano notes or held vocal tones, or a pitch that is not quite where it should be. Most people conclude the record is at fault.

Pro-Ject’s own maintenance guidance is to replace the belt every year, or at the very outside every two years, regardless of how much you play. They also list the symptoms worth watching for: pitch instability, audible wow or flutter, the belt slipping at start-up, and visible slack, glazing or cracking on the belt itself. Any of those means it is overdue, not that it is due.

Handling matters. Fit it with clean hands or, better, hold it by the edges — skin oils degrade rubber and a fingerprint on the running surface will find its way onto the motor pulley. Wipe the pulley and the inner rim of the sub-platter with a lint-free cloth before you fit the new belt, since a decade of shed rubber accumulates there.

One note on which belt. Pro-Ject sells several belt profiles — flat, round and square — because different decks need different ones, and they do not publish a per-model fitment list on the individual belt pages. This listing is the belt for the Debut series, Debut EVO and X-series decks. Note separately that on decks which play 78s, the round belt used for that speed is a different part from the main drive belt.
