Technics - SL-50C Direct Drive Turntable
Technics’ new entry point: coreless direct drive, a fitted Ortofon 2M Red, a built-in phono stage and a smaller, lighter chassis. No auto-lift — this one is fully manual at both ends of the record.
Announced at CEDIA in 2025, the SL-50C sits below the SL-1500C in Technics’ US line-up at $899 against $1,499 and up. The engineering priorities are visible in what got smaller: a 300mm platter instead of 332mm, 7.1kg instead of 9.9kg, a 430 x 128 x 353mm chassis against the SL-1500C’s 453 x 169 x 372mm, and 4W of consumption instead of 8W.
What did not get cut is the part that matters most. It is a direct drive with a brushless DC motor — Technics’ press release calls it iron-coreless, though the owner’s manual’s own spec table stops at “brushless DC motor” — and it posts the same 0.025% wow and flutter and the same 0.7-second start-up time as the models above it. An Ortofon 2M Red is fitted with an elliptical stylus, and a 36.5dB phono equaliser is built in with a rear PHONO/LINE switch, so it will feed any line input in the house on day one.
The real difference from the SL-1500C, and the one to know before you order, is that there is no Auto Lifter. The SL-50C’s manual describes fully manual operation at the end of a side: you lift the cue lever and press stop yourself. If you play records while doing something else — or while falling asleep — the SL-1500C or SL-1500CS is the one you want.
Technics’ own documentation is measurably thinner for this model than for the ones above it: starting torque, arm height adjustment range, anti-skate detail and the cartridge’s electrical specification are all published for the SL-1500C and simply absent from the SL-50C’s manual. Where that is the case below, we say so rather than borrowing a figure from a different product.

Specifications
- Type: Direct drive manual turntable
- Drive: Direct drive
- Motor: Brushless DC motor per the owner’s manual spec table. Technics’ CEDIA press release additionally describes it as an iron-coreless direct-drive motor; the manual does not use the word coreless. Coil and pole counts are not published
- Platter: Aluminium die-cast, 300mm, approximately 1.26kg including the turntable mat. No layer construction is published for this model
- Speeds: 33 1/3, 45 and 78rpm. Technics’ manual notes the turntable runs at 78.26rpm when set to 78
- Starting torque: Not published. The SL-50C’s manual omits this row, unlike the SL-1500C’s
- Start-up time: 0.7 seconds from standstill to 33 1/3rpm
- Braking: Electronic brake — listed as its own spec row on this model and absent from the SL-1500C material
- Wow and flutter: 0.025% W.R.M.S.
- Rumble / signal-to-noise ratio: Not published
- Tonearm: Static balance. Technics’ press release describes it as an S-shaped aluminium tonearm
- Effective tonearm length: 230mm
- Overhang: 15mm
- Offset angle: 22°
- Effective tonearm mass: Not published. Technics publishes no tonearm effective mass figure for any turntable in the current range.
- Arm height adjustment: Not published for this model
- Anti-skate: Not published for this model
- Cartridge fitted: Ortofon 2M Red with an elliptical stylus, pre-mounted
- Cartridge specification: Not published. The SL-50C’s manual lists the cartridge by model name only, without the output, tracking force and mass figures the SL-1500C’s manual gives
- Built-in phono equaliser: Yes, 36.5dB gain, with a rear PHONO/LINE selector switch so it can be bypassed. THD, RIAA accuracy and signal-to-noise for the phono stage are not published
- Auto lift: None. Technics’ manual describes fully manual operation at the end of a side
- Outputs: PHONO (pin jack) x1, LINE (pin jack) x1, earth terminal x1
- Insulators: Height-adjustable by rotating the foot. No material description is published for this model
- Dimensions: 430 x 128 x 353 mm (W x H x D)
- Weight: Approximately 7.1kg (15.7 lbs)
- Power supply: AC 120V, 60Hz
- Power consumption: 4W on; 0.2W off
- Country of manufacture: Not published. Technics prints no country-of-manufacture statement on its product pages, specification sheets or owner’s manuals for any model in the current range — we checked all three for this product. Claims circulate online about where Technics builds its turntables; none of them come from Technics, so we are not going to repeat them here as fact.
- Warranty: Panasonic administers Technics warranty in the United States and the term varies by model rather than by product category. Panasonic’s support page for the SL-50C-H lists two years parts and two years labour. Note that the same page currently shows a discontinued status badge for that colour SKU while Technics still sells the SL-50C as a current model — Panasonic does not explain the inconsistency and we are flagging it rather than resolving it. Technics states that product registration is not required and does not extend coverage. A dated sales receipt is required, coverage runs to the original purchaser, and the product must be purchased and serviced in the United States. Non-rechargeable batteries, antennas and cosmetic cabinet parts are excluded. Note that Technics’ warranty statement does not explicitly name styli or cartridges as excluded items, even though wear-part exclusion is normal industry practice — we would not assume coverage either way without asking Panasonic first.
