Sweetnighter is where Weather Report leaned into groove — Zawinul and Shorter setting long vamps against a heavier rhythmic bottom, on the way to the sound that would define the rest of the decade. Side one alone stretches from the thirteen-minute "Boogie Woogie Waltz" to the brief, gorgeous "Adios," and side two opens with the twelve-minute "125th Street Congress." This is the record that shows the turn.
