A two-way bookshelf pair with a polymer-injected mica cone woofer and an aluminium dome tweeter on Yamaha’s waveguide horn, in an elliptical high-gloss piano black cabinet, internally wired with Monster Cable.

The elliptical cabinet is the visible design decision. Curved side walls have no parallel surfaces to trap standing waves between, and the rounded front edges give the tweeter less of a sharp boundary to diffract from — Yamaha describes it as solid construction with minimal sound diffraction. The finish is high-gloss piano black, and it is the only finish Yamaha publishes for this model.

The 5-inch woofer uses a PMD cone — polymer-injected mica diaphragm — which is a stiff, well-damped cone material, and the 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter sits in Yamaha’s own waveguide horn, which shapes its dispersion so the off-axis response holds together better across a wider listening area. Both details come from Yamaha’s feature page; the owner’s manual specification table lists the drivers by size only and names no materials, so if you compare the two Yamaha documents you will find one thinner than the other rather than contradictory.

Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V into a 6-ohm nominal load, with a recommended amplifier range up to 60 watts nominal and 150 watts maximum. The crossover is at 3 kHz, a figure Yamaha prints in the owner’s manual but not on the web specification page. One genuine conflict to note: the web page gives frequency response as 65 Hz – 35 kHz and the manual gives 60 Hz – 35 kHz. Yamaha states no tolerance or reference level with this figure — no ±3 dB or similar — so it cannot be compared like-for-like against a competitor’s figure that does carry one.

Specifications

  • Type: Two-way bass-reflex bookshelf loudspeaker, magnetically shielded
  • Sold as: A pair
  • Woofer: 13 cm (5″) cone. Yamaha’s feature page identifies the material as PMD, polymer-injected mica diaphragm; the owner’s manual specification table gives size only
  • Tweeter: 2.5 cm (1″) aluminium dome with Yamaha’s waveguide horn, per the feature page. The manual gives size and type only
  • Crossover frequency: 3 kHz, per the owner’s manual. Not listed on Yamaha’s web specification page
  • Frequency response: Yamaha’s US specification page states 65 Hz – 35 kHz; the owner’s manual states 60 Hz – 35 kHz. Both are Yamaha figures and we report both. Yamaha states no tolerance or reference level with this figure — no ±3 dB or similar — so it cannot be compared like-for-like against a competitor’s figure that does carry one.
  • Nominal impedance: 6 ohms. Minimum impedance not published
  • Sensitivity: 87 dB at 2.83 V / 1 m
  • Input power: 60 W nominal, 150 W maximum
  • Cabinet: Elliptical form, high-gloss piano black. This is the only finish Yamaha publishes for this model
  • Internal wiring: Monster Cable, per Yamaha’s feature page
  • Resonance control: None named beyond the elliptical cabinet shape and magnetic shielding. Yamaha names no proprietary resonance-suppression system for this model, unlike the NS-5000
  • Binding posts and bi-wiring: Not published. No bi-wire terminal specification appears on Yamaha’s feature or specification pages, and Yamaha does not state single-wire either
  • Grille: Acoustically transparent grille cloth. Yamaha does not specify magnetic or peg attachment
  • Dimensions (W×H×D): 7-7/8″ × 12-5/8″ × 8-3/8″ (200 × 320 × 213 mm)
  • Weight: 12.1 lb (5.5 kg) per speaker. Yamaha’s manual states 12 lb 2 oz; the web page states 12.1 lb
  • Country of manufacture: Indonesia. Yamaha states this only in the Chinese-language compliance section of the owner’s manual, which reads “原产地:印度尼西亚” — country of origin: Indonesia. It is a genuine Yamaha statement; it simply does not appear on any English page or in any English section of the manual
  • Warranty: Two years, parts and labour, under Yamaha Corporation of America’s general A/V Products limited warranty, whose two-year bracket covers “speaker systems purchased individually.” This model is not named in the five-year Premium Hi-Fi Products document, which covers only the NS-5000 and NS-2000A among Yamaha’s speakers. Registration is explicitly not required. Cover is enforceable only by the original purchaser.
