Yamaha - R-N1000A Network Receiver

A complete system in one box: 100 watts a channel, an ESS Sabre ES9080Q DAC, streaming over Wi-Fi and Ethernet with AirPlay 2 and MusicCast, YPAO room correction with the microphone included, an FM/AM tuner, a moving-magnet phono input and an HDMI ARC input for the television.

The R-N1000A is aimed at the listener who wants one component to do everything. It streams (Ethernet or Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, MusicCast, Spotify and Amazon Music HD are named by Yamaha, and Yamaha describes it as Roon Tested rather than Roon Ready), it takes a turntable, it tunes FM and AM, it accepts a computer over USB into a 384 kHz / 32-bit ESS Sabre ES9080Q converter with native DSD to 11.2 MHz, and it drives a pair of speakers with 100 watts a side.

YPAO is the part people underrate. Yamaha supplies the measurement microphone in the box — you do not buy it separately — and YPAO-R.S.C. with precision EQ measures the room’s reflected sound and corrects for it. Yamaha’s manual describes a single-position measurement, placing the microphone at ear height in the listening seat; no multi-point procedure is documented.

Two points to be precise about. The HDMI socket is a single ARC input for a television, not a source input — you cannot run a Blu-ray player into it, and Yamaha’s manual states in as many words that eARC is not supported. And the USB port is Type-B for a computer only; there is no front USB-A socket for a flash drive. The phono stage is moving-magnet only, so a low-output moving-coil cartridge needs a step-up device. There are no level meters on this model — those are the R-N2000A’s.

Construction is Yamaha’s ToP-ART symmetrical layout on an ART Base chassis with a double bottom and a 1 mm iron damping plate. Yamaha does not use the floating balanced power amplifier or toroidal transformer language here; those terms appear only on the R-N2000A, and the difference is real rather than an omission.
