The AT-VM740xML is part of Audio-Technica's current VMx series, the refresh of the acclaimed VM700 line. Its vertical dual moving magnet design closely mirrors the cutter head used to make the vinyl master, with two magnets matched to the left and right channels of the groove. New to the x-series are upgraded PCUHD (Pure Copper Ultra High Drawability) coils in a paratoroidal construction with slightly reduced coil turns for enhanced transient response, plus threaded inserts that let the cartridge mount with just two screws and a V-cut stylus protector for quick alignment reference.
The nude Microlinear stylus (2.2 x 0.12 mil curvature radius) tracks the record groove with incredible accuracy, providing more nuanced sound than elliptical or conical tips. It is mounted on an aluminum tapered pipe cantilever that reduces mass near the stylus tip for quicker signal transmission, all housed in a die-cast aluminum body that damps vibration and resonance.
