Focal - Bathys MG Headphones

The magnesium-driver flagship of Focal’s wireless range — Bluetooth 5.2, a 10Hz low-frequency figure and a genuine 24-bit / 192kHz USB-DAC mode.

Bathys MG launched in March 2025, two years after the original Bathys, and sits above it rather than replacing it. The MG in the name is the driver: a 40mm ‘M’-profile dome in pure magnesium rather than the aluminium/magnesium alloy of the standard model, made in Focal’s French workshops.

Magnesium is the lightest structural metal in common use and has notably high internal damping, meaning it converts resonant energy into heat within the material instead of ringing. Focal publishes a wider low-frequency limit for the MG as a result — 10Hz against the Bathys’s 15Hz. Bluetooth moves from 5.1 to 5.2, and Focal states the eight-microphone array has been retuned for stronger noise cancelling, though it publishes no attenuation figure to put a number on that.

Everything else in the feature set carries over. Three cancelling modes — Silent, Soft and Transparent — selected on the left earcup or in the app. USB-DAC mode at up to 24-bit / 192kHz over USB-C, bypassing Bluetooth. Codec support covering SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive. The Focal & Naim app with its five-band equaliser and the Mimi hearing test. Thirty hours over Bluetooth with cancelling running, thirty-five on the jack, forty-two in USB-DAC mode, and five more hours from a fifteen-minute charge.

The build is where the money also goes: aluminium and magnesium in the yoke, a genuine leather and microfibre headband, ergonomic foam earpads and a backlit Focal logo that can be dimmed or switched off in the app. As with the standard Bathys, both the jack and the USB input are actively amplified — there is no passive playback on a flat battery.
