From their genesis as the in-house band at Addis Ababa's Venus Club in the early 1970s, Hailu Mergia and the Walias Band were at the forefront of modern Ethiopian music, pioneering full instrumental albums and independent recording. Originally released in 1975, Tezeta was the band's second recording and had been nearly impossible to find for decades. Sourced and reissued by Awesome Tapes From Africa and expertly remastered by Jessica Thompson, its funky, evocative renditions are anchored by Hailu's melodic organ, front and center on every track.
