In July 1960, in protest against the accelerating commercialization of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Charles Mingus and Max Roach staged their own "rebel" festival at nearby Cliff Walk Manor. Newport Rebels captures the high-spirited freedom of that moment, with nearly all of the music improvised in the studio. Of particular note is Booker Little's "Cliff Walk," featuring both Max Roach and Jo Jones — two of the greatest jazz drummers ever — trading off. This edition is remastered by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman and includes Nat Hentoff's original liner notes.
