Prisoner In Disguise reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 on its way to platinum certification. Producer Peter Asher again framed Ronstadt's voice across country, rock, soul and gospel material, drawing on writers including Neil Young, Lowell George, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Cliff and Dolly Parton.

Highlights include the Top 5 hit "Heat Wave," a version of "Tracks Of My Tears" and an early recording of Parton's "I Will Always Love You." Emmylou Harris joins her on "The Sweetest Gift," and the band includes Andrew Gold, J.D. Souther and James Taylor.
