Mobile Fidelity - UltraPhono Pro

The flagship MasterPhono’s core architecture distilled into a single-input MM/MC phono stage — fully discrete J-FET and MOSFET stages, zero-feedback passive RIAA, and a seven-stage regulated balanced power supply.

The UltraPhono Pro arrived in February 2026, a collaboration with audio engineer Peter Madnick — the same engineer behind MoFi’s flagship MasterPhono. It distils that unit’s core architecture into a streamlined, single-input, all-analog design whose goal is to extract the maximum information from a cartridge with the minimum signal loss along the way.

It handles both moving magnet and moving coil. The spec sheet describes the input as “voltage mode”, which distinguishes it from the current-mode transimpedance input on the MasterPhono — it does not mean the unit is limited to moving magnets. Loading runs from 100 ohms to 47k, and gain reaches 65dB on the single-ended output or 71dB balanced.

Input and output stages are fully discrete J-FET and MOSFET designs, and RIAA correction is entirely passive with zero feedback — the equalization curve is set by precision components rather than by a loop correcting its own errors. Resistors are held to 0.1 to 0.5 percent tolerance, capacitors are matched polypropylene film and foil to within one percent, and a seven-stage regulated balanced power supply feeds the audio circuitry.

Gain and loading are set from the front panel rather than buried on a rear jumper block, so matching a cartridge is a matter of a few seconds of listening. Mono, subsonic, mute and dim functions are all on hand. The chassis pairs brushed-aluminum panels with a rigid steel frame, and both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs are provided — the balanced outputs are electronically balanced and DC coupled rather than transformer fed.

Note there is a single RCA input, so a second tonearm or turntable is not accommodated. Note also that despite the name this is not an upgraded UltraPhono — the two sit in entirely different tiers and share no design lineage.
