Nagaoka is unusually direct about why this product exists. Ordinary vinyl inner sleeves contain plasticisers, and over years of contact those additives attack the record surface, leaving a cloudy white discolouration. The trade calls it vinyl burn. A record with it cannot be played back cleanly, and cleaning will not remove it — the damage is in the surface, not on it.

Glassine has none of that chemistry. It is a dense, smooth paper that resists moisture, oil, mould and abrasion, which is why archives use it and why Nagaoka reaches for it for records meant to sit undisturbed for a long time.

Two details separate these from generic glassine. The sleeve has a fold-over flap, so the record is fully enclosed and dust cannot settle inside. And the opening is gusseted rather than flat, which gives the disc room to come out without being dragged against the edge of the paper — the usual cause of the fine scuffing you find on records stored in tight sleeves.

Nagaoka states that every stage of production is carried out in Japan.
