Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation is Ornette Coleman's landmark 1961 album, recorded December 21, 1960 in a single take with no overdubbing or editing. It features a "double quartet" — two self-contained jazz quartets playing simultaneously in separate channels — and at thirty-seven minutes was the first album-length improvisation, unheard of at the time. The original gatefold package famously incorporated Jackson Pollock's painting The White Light.
