Ortofon - LH-9000 Carbon Fiber Headshell

Ortofon’s carbon fibre headshell and the heavyweight of the range at 16.8g — aimed squarely at its top moving coils.

Ortofon’s claim for the LH-9000 is narrow and specific: it is made using carbon fibre resin for the elimination of unwanted resonances. That is the whole of the technical case, and Ortofon publishes no damping figures or measurements behind it.

The specification sheet is more honest than the marketing name. This is not an all-carbon headshell — Ortofon lists the material as magnesium with carbon fibre, a composite structure rather than a pure carbon shell. At 52.0mm long by 20.0mm wide with a 38.1 to 44.9mm mounting range it is a full-size headshell, and at 16.8g without screws it is the heaviest of the six in Ortofon’s current range.

That mass is the real consideration rather than a footnote. Against the SH-4’s 9.2g this adds 7.6g at the business end of the arm, which raises effective mass considerably — generally what a low-compliance moving coil wants, and certainly something that will need the counterweight moving. Ortofon recommends it for the Cadenza series, MC A95, MC Diamond and MC Windfeld Ti. It publishes no effective mass figure or arm-matching guidance, so treat the compliance reasoning as general practice rather than a manufacturer recommendation. Leadwires are included.

A note on the name, since it appears on a lot of listings: this product is widely sold as the “LH-9000 Carbon Fiber with Azimuth”. Ortofon’s own pages make no azimuth claim for the LH-9000 at all — it explicitly claims azimuth adjustment for the LH-10000 above it, and says nothing here. We are not going to assert a feature the manufacturer doesn’t.
