Recorded in early 1961 and conducted by Quincy Jones, Rights of Swing is alto saxophonist Phil Woods' ambitious five-part suite — widely regarded as one of his finest recordings. Early in his career Woods was dubbed "The New Bird" for his Charlie Parker–rooted fluency, but here he asserts a fully original voice across a large-scale composition rooted in jazz tradition, performed with a stellar ensemble drawn from Quincy Jones' band. The LP features liner notes by Candid producer Nat Hentoff along with commentary from Woods himself.
