Soulville is quintessential Ben Webster: intimate, tender and endlessly expressive. Recorded in 1957, when Webster was already recognized as one of jazz's elder statesmen, it pairs his breathy tenor with Oscar Peterson's group, including bassist Ray Brown, guitarist Herb Ellis and drummer Stan Levey. Leading the combo through vintage pop tunes and bluesy originals such as "Last Date" and the title track, it's easily the best of his Verve albums and a quality set from start to finish.
