Donald Byrd - Royal Flush - Blue Note Classic LP
Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, 180 Gram LP, All-Analog, Mastered by Kevin Gray
Donald Byrd was off to the races after joining Blue Note in 1958 and had fully hit his hard-bop stride by 1961 when he laid down the excellent Royal Flush. Joining the trumpeter was a state-of-the-art rhythm section featuring a young Herbie Hancock on piano (only his second Blue Note appearance), Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, alongside Byrd's frequent frontline partner Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone. Side One pairs two Byrd originals around a showstopping reading of "I'm a Fool to Want You," while Side Two offers more Byrd compositions before closing with Hancock's "Requiem."
