After appearing on Jackie McLean's forward-thinking albums One Step Beyond and Destination... Out! in 1963, trombonist Grachan Moncur III made his riveting inside-out debut later that year with Evolution. Returning to Van Gelder Studio the next year, Moncur ventured even deeper into experimental waters. Some Other Stuff is boldly avant-garde, pairing the trombonist with fellow explorers Wayne Shorter (sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), and Tony Williams (drums). The set of four expansive Moncur originals includes the freeform "Gnostic," the slyly swinging "Thandiwa," the playful "The Twins," and the drum feature "Nomadic."
