The penultimate studio album from the Grateful Dead, released in 1987, In the Dark was their first Top 10 album and yielded their first Top 10 single, "Touch of Grey." Many songs had been in the live repertoire for years and are now considered bona fide classics, including "Throwing Stones," "West L.A. Fadeaway," "Hell in a Bucket" and the beautiful ballad "Black Muddy River." Co-produced by longtime Dead engineer John Cutler with Jerry Garcia, the album captures the band's live energy, with basic tracks performed live at the Marin County Civic Auditorium.
