A decade into his recording career, pianist Horace Silver made the album that would endure as the crown jewel of a catalog full of hard-bop classics. Song for My Father captured the transition of his quintet, pairing two tracks from a 1963 session with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook with four cuts from a 1964 band featuring Carmell Jones and Joe Henderson. The signature title track, a dedication to his father, was inspired by Silver's Cape Verdean heritage and a recent trip to Brazil.
