Trumpeter Lee Morgan was just 19 and still early in his Blue Note association when he cut the brightly swinging City Lights in August 1957. The date featured a superb sextet with Curtis Fuller (trombone), George Coleman (alto and tenor sax), Ray Bryant (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Art Taylor (drums). The 5-song set includes three Benny Golson compositions (“City Lights,” “Tempo De Waltz,” “Just by Myself”), a stunning ballad reading of “You're Mine You,” and Gigi Gryce's groovy closer “Kin Folks.”
