New Order's 1981 debut album Movement found the band navigating a strange transition—moving forward in the wake of Ian Curtis's death while not dismissing their Joy Division past. With Bernard Sumner stepping up to take over lead vocals, and Martin Hannett producing, the record captures Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris between a rock and a hard place. Once seen as a transitional work, it has since earned considerable critical reevaluation as a highly successful album in its own right.
