Recorded in 1964 but unreleased until 1980, Stanley Turrentine's In Memory Of is an inspired set spanning swinging hard bop, beautiful balladry and African rhythms. The soulful tenor saxophonist fronts a tremendous sextet featuring Blue Mitchell, Curtis Fuller, Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw and Otis "Candy" Finch, with highlights including Wes Montgomery's "Fried Pies" and the irrepressible "Niger Mambo." This stereo Tone Poet edition was produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.
