The Jazz Crusaders - Freedom Sound - Tone Poet LP
$38.99
180g Vinyl LP, Tone Poet Audiophile Reissue Series
The Jazz Crusaders officially adopted that name with the release of Freedom Sound, their 1961 debut on Pacific Jazz. The Houston-founded band blended jazz aspirations with R&B roots for a potent dose of hard bop, soul jazz, gospel and Texas blues. Core members Stix Hooper (drums), Joe Sample (piano), Wayne Henderson (trombone) and Wilton Felder (tenor saxophone) are joined by bassist Jimmy Bond and guest guitarist Roy Gaines. Highlights include Felder's 6/8 blues "The Geek" and Sample's stately civil-rights anthem "Freedom Sound."
