An essential document of European jazz in the 1970s, Balladyna still sounds magnificent today and exerted an enduring influence on successive generations of improvising musicians. Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko is joined by drummer Edward Vesala, saxophonist Tomasz Szukalski and master bassist Dave Holland, exploring seven originals with rhythmic propulsion and melodic curiosity. Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in 1975 and produced by Manfred Eicher, it was Stanko's debut for ECM — the recording on which, as he put it, his international name was built.
