This collection gathers some of the finest music ever released on Black Jazz Records, the pioneering label that across its short four-year run between 1971 and 1975 issued over twenty albums blending spiritual jazz, funk and soul jazz of the highest caliber. Founded in Oakland by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory, Black Jazz stood alongside Strata-East and Tribe as a defining home for independent, conscious jazz. Originally compiled in 1996, it returns here fully remastered and with new artwork.
