Wayne Shorter's prolific 1964–65 run for Blue Note was so fertile that the label couldn't keep pace, and The Soothsayer — recorded just two months after Speak No Evil — sat shelved until 1979. Cut at Van Gelder Studio with a stellar sextet of Freddie Hubbard, James Spaulding, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams, the album captures deeply engaged readings of five Shorter compositions plus an arrangement of Sibelius's "Valse Triste," including the stunning Billie Holiday tribute "Lady Day."
