The Exciting Wilson Pickett, released in 1966, was the R&B and soul singer's third album and the highest-charting studio album of his career, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard R&B albums chart and No. 21 on the pop albums chart. Making it, Pickett ended his relationship with Stax in Memphis, where he had cut his early singles, and moved to Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where he would record for the next two years — the move that sealed his stature as a major '60s soul man.

Four crossover hits came out of these sessions. "In the Midnight Hour" reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart and No. 21 pop. "Land of a Thousand Dances" went No. 1 R&B and No. 6 pop, his biggest pop hit. "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)," a song Pickett did not like on first hearing, hit No. 1 and No. 13. "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)" reached No. 13 and No. 53. The deeper cuts carry real weight too, from the standards "Something You Got," "Barefootin'" and "Mercy Mercy" to originals written with Memphis soul greats Steve Cropper, Eddie Floyd and David Porter.

This edition is part of "75 for 75," the Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series celebrating the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records. The hybrid disc carries a stereo SACD layer plus a Red Book stereo CD layer, so it plays in any conventional CD player as well.
