Hybrid Stereo SACD — plays in all CD and SACD players. Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series reissue of Yes' 1972 progressive rock masterpiece.
Yes' 1972 three-track masterpiece Close to the Edge catches an adventurous rock band at the peak of its powers, pushing itself musically both as individuals and as a unit. The first half of the 1970s was an especially fertile stretch for British progressive rock, and among a field that includes Tarkus, Selling England by the Pound, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, The Dark Side of the Moon, and Thick as a Brick, many listeners still name Close to the Edge the ultimate prog album.
The centerpiece is the 18-minute title track, its themes and lyrics inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel Siddhartha. Side two holds two non-conceptual pieces, the folk-inspired "And You and I" and the comparatively straightforward rocker "Siberian Khatru." Original drummer Bill Bruford found the album so laborious to make that he quit the band once it was recorded, joining King Crimson. It became Yes' biggest commercial success to that point, reaching No. 4 on the U.K. Albums Chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 — still the band's highest U.S. chart placing — and in 2020 it was ranked No. 445 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Part of "75 for 75," the Atlantic 75 series marking Atlantic Records' 75th anniversary.
