Sovereign. Precise. Timeless. The Current-Production TD 1601 Pairs Thorens' Legendary Stabilized Floating Sub-Chassis with the Flagship TP 160 Knife-Edge Tonearm, Electric Lift, and True Balanced XLR Output

This is the latest evolution of the TD 1601 — Thorens' modern successor to the beloved TD 160 — now equipped with the same TP 160 precision tonearm found on the flagship TD 124 DD. The classic recipe remains: wooden plinth, two-part machined aluminum platter with internally routed belt, machined precision belt with adjustable tension, and an acrylic dust cover, offered in Gloss Black or Gloss Walnut.

The suspension is pure Thorens DNA, perfected. Three conical springs support the sub-chassis from below rather than hanging from the top board, and a strongly tensioned steel thread anchors the sub-chassis to a steel pin in the base — eliminating the lateral stagger that plagued vintage suspended decks and allowing only pure vertical movement. The result is the forgiving, footfall-immune isolation a floating sub-chassis is famous for, with far more precise geometry than the classics ever managed.

The 9" TP 160 tonearm is the star of this revision: a J-shaped arm riding a precision knife-edge (cutter) bearing for maximum tracking accuracy, fitted with a standard SME bayonet headshell connector so cartridge swaps take seconds. The electronically controlled synchronous motor draws clean power from the included TPN 1600 external linear power supply, with electronic speed change between 33-1/3 and 45 rpm. Thorens' patented electric tonearm lift raises the arm at the touch of a button, and a touchless auto shut-off lifts it at the end of the record — no mechanism ever touches the signal path. Balanced XLR outputs alongside the RCA pair make it a natural partner for MC cartridges and higher-end systems. Mount your favorite pickup and enjoy.
