April Harper Grey has described the record as "music for malls, airports, hotels, supermarkets," and it earns the framing: written and recorded city to city while touring, U trades the guitar-driven, folk-tinged edges of her earlier work for autotuned vocals, dubstep low end and the rubbery rhythmic snap of late-'90s and early-2000s R&B production. Grey produced every track herself. It functions as a self-titled album of sorts, drawing on every era of the underscores catalog — future bass, jazz chords, guitar-led maximalist pop — into her most focused and sharply defined statement to date.
