Yamaha - GT-5000 Turntable

Yamaha’s flagship turntable: a belt-driven, crystal-controlled deck with a short straight tonearm, a machined aluminium platter on a brass sub-platter, and a true balanced XLR output that carries the cartridge signal differentially all the way to the preamplifier.

The balanced output is the feature that sets the GT-5000 apart from almost every other turntable at any price. A phono cartridge is inherently a balanced source — a coil with two ends and no ground reference — and most turntables throw that away by tying one side to ground at the RCA jack. The GT-5000 keeps it differential: one XLR output pair wired pin 1 ground, pin 2 hot, pin 3 cold, alongside a conventional RCA pair. Paired with Yamaha’s own C-5000 preamplifier and M-5000 power amplifier it makes a fully balanced chain from stylus to speaker terminals.

The tonearm is deliberately unconventional. Yamaha calls it a static balance straight tonearm: short, straight, and with no offset angle at the headshell. The conventional S-shaped or offset arm exists to reduce tracking error across the record, and this arm accepts more of it — a third-party account in Hi-Fi News puts the trade-off at up to 10 degrees against about 5 for a conventional 9-inch offset arm, though that figure is the reviewer’s and not one Yamaha publishes. Yamaha’s argument for the choice is that the rigidity gained and the side-force removed matter more than the tracking angle given up. It is a real engineering position and worth understanding before you buy, not a detail to gloss over.

Everything else is conventional and well executed. An AC synchronous motor driven from a built-in crystal oscillator turns a 350 mm machined aluminium platter riding on a 143 mm brass sub-platter; wow and flutter is 0.04% WRMS with speed adjustable in 0.1% steps over a ±1.5% range. The headshell is detachable and secured by a lock nut, VTA adjusts with a hex key, and the plinth is a heavy wooden chassis in a piano black finish. No cartridge is supplied — Yamaha’s manual says so explicitly.
