For his third album, released on Motown in 1964, Marvin Gaye presented himself as a big-band singer working through pop and jazz standards. At his own request he tackled two songs from Billie Holiday's classic Lady in Satin, "I'll Be Around" and "You've Changed." With brooding vocals and arrangements by Melba Liston, Jerome Richardson and Ernie Wilkins, the album reveals a deeper artist, presaging the mature Marvin later heard on Vulnerable.
