The Horace Silver Quintet - Serenade to a Soul Sister - Blue Note Classic LP
180g Vinyl LP — Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series
Horace Silver had delivered hard bop classic after hard bop classic for more than a decade when he shifted into groovier territory, and 1968's Serenade to a Soul Sister is a memorable soul-jazz outing. The album presents six Silver originals recorded a month apart with two different quintets — the first featuring Stanley Turrentine, Charles Tolliver, Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker, the second pairing Tolliver with Bennie Maupin, John Williams and Billy Cobham. Highlights include the high-octane opener "Psychedelic Sally," the groove waltz title track, the percolating "Jungle Juice" and the tender closing ballad "Next Time I Fall in Love."
