By 1978 George Clinton had five bands signed across three labels, and The Brides of Funkenstein — backing singers Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva — were among them, taking their name from a character Clinton invented for the 1976 Parliament LP "The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein." Their debut, Funk or Walk, climbed into the upper reaches of the R&B chart and sent the duo on a record-store signing tour. Every song was written by P-Funk legends including Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Gary Shider and Clinton himself.
