Basra (1965) is the lone Blue Note date drummer Pete La Roca recorded as a leader during the label's heyday. He assembled a remarkable quartet — Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Steve Kuhn on piano and Steve Swallow on bass — for a session that sounds like a working band of years' standing. La Roca's three originals and his stimulating drumming bring out the best in the players, but it's Henderson who lifts the album into the cosmos.
