Hank Mobley - A Slice of the Top - Tone Poet LP
$38.99
180g Vinyl — Blue Note Tone Poet Audiophile Reissue
Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley had been building a formidable Blue Note catalog for over a decade when he conceived A Slice of the Top, recorded in 1966 but not released until 1979. Inspired by Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool, Mobley collaborated with arranger Duke Pearson for an unusual octet adding Kiane Zawadi's euphonium and Howard Johnson's tuba to a lineup featuring Lee Morgan, James Spaulding, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. Mobley takes lyrical flight on standouts like "Hank's Other Bag" and the title track.
